Editorial Policy
This page explains, plainly, how the briefs on AtlanticDesk are produced, so you can judge how much weight to give them.
How stories are chosen
Each day we publish a small number of stories rather than trying to cover everything. Two of them are the stories drawing the most attention across Europe, judged from what people are searching for in several European countries and from how many independent news outlets are reporting them. The other three come from three different topics, and which topics they are changes every day, so that every topic is covered regularly. On an exceptionally large news day we may add one more.
Stories are chosen using publicly available headlines and summaries from established news outlets. We prefer stories where the source gives us enough real material to write from, and we do not publish a story at all when we cannot do it responsibly.
How briefs are written, and the role of AI
Our briefs are drafted with the help of an AI writing assistant, working from the headline and summary published by the original outlet, and the result is a new piece written in our own words with added background and context. We do not copy the original article. The AI is instructed not to invent facts, figures or quotes, and to leave out charts, tables and statistics unless the source material actually contains them.
Because the drafting is automated and works from short summaries, a brief is an overview, not a substitute for the original reporting. Every article credits and links its original source at the end, and for anything important, such as financial, legal or medical decisions, you should read the original report and consult a qualified professional.
Images
Most illustrations on this site are original hand-drawn style artwork generated by our own software; they are illustrations and are never presented as photographs of real events. Where a photograph is used, it comes from a source that permits reuse (for example Wikimedia Commons or Unsplash), and the photographer or source is credited under the image. We do not reuse images from news publishers.
Independence
Coverage is never sold. Advertising, where it appears, is clearly separate from editorial content and does not influence which stories we choose or how we describe them.
